LYON V LIVERPOOL
Wednesday 4 November 2009 19:45

Liverpool return to Champions League action on Wednesday in a mouth-watering clash with Lyon at the Stade de Gerland.

The Reds will be aiming for victory having only managed to amass three points from their opening three fixtures in the competition.

But Lyon's victory at Anfield proved they will provide a stern test for Rafa Benitez and his charges, and Claude Puel's men have collected maximum points so far in the competition.

That late goal at Anfield has made it essential we get something from this match and preferably that something is a win. Given our current injury woes our medical team may have as big an impact on this result as the players.

We have to win all the remaining games in the CL and
Lyon away is certainly the toughest but not impossible.
Realistically they have already been qualified for the kock out stage.
They just beat their neighbours and fiercest rivals Saint Etienne yesterday in the league.
so they may now sit back relaxing and it will give us space.

in any case their fans have been planning to give a nice welcome to travelling supporters and the team
to give us back the friendly treatments they recieved before, during and after the game at Anfield

It is a game we can win for sure, then birmingham at home afterwards which we should also win, after that who knows , rafa is now in that zone where one defeat and calls for his head are deafning

Needless to say this is a must-win game for Liverpool .... how many times have said this of Liverpool this season! Lyon are tough customers, and with Liverpool down on confidence, this match is going to be even tougher. It is a situation where the Red players would be short on belief, and the only way to counter this in France, is to start the game with a very high tempo and pin the French team for long-periods in teh first half .... hopefully nick a goal or two in the process.

A loss would certainly put Liverpool out of the running despite what others may say, and the Europa Cup will be the next target.

Well, this is an eagerly awaited game - and another performance ala ManUtd is needed from the Reds!

Doesn't look like johnson or gerrard will make it which is a blow. Really hope riera gets fit soon. If kelly is fit i would play him as he is better defensively than degen.

Degen isn't in our CL squad anyway.

Might have to be Carra at right back, or Kuyt?!??!

Torres

Reina
Kelly - Carragher - Agger - Aurelio
Mascherano - Lucas
Kuyt - Benayoun - Dossena
Torres

Subs: Cavalieri, Skrtel, Insua, Aquilani, Spearing, Babel, NGog.

Fingers crossed that at least some of the injured/ill players make it back. I'd prefer Kelly to start at RB is he's fit, don't want to see Carra there . Aurelio at LB at the expense of Insua, who has been bad in our last few matches and is suffering a dip in form. Aurelio is better defensively and his crossing and deadball delivery is second to none. The CM to be unchanged, sub Aquilani in around the 60th minute mark. Kuyt on the right, let's hope he'll do better than yesterday, Benayoun behind Torres in his favourite position and Dossena on the left, if he's fit enough to start as he offers good width and good crosses to the squad. Or if Riera is fit, he should start. I've checked the injuries and suspensions tracker on the beta site now and on 19th Oct it said that he's going to be out for another 1-2 weeks, so in theory he could be ready just in time for this clash.

Someone please explain to me why we have just given Stephen Darby a new contract He is 21 year old has been at Anfield for years progressing through the ranks captaining the club at Youth & Reserve level. Played most of his career at Right Back but equally happy to play anywhere along the back four. Lad must have been disappointed to see Martin Kelly come into side against Lyon, even though he is a couple of years his junior. How must he have felt seeing that joke of a footballer Degan picked in front of him at Arsenal & then at Fulham. If Stephen isnt good enough why not dump him like Adam Hammill or Paul Anderson.
Would love to hear Rafa's thoughts then again " we were controlling the situation and creating chances........................................... ."

I dont know to be honest mate, I would partner N'Gog up with Fernando. If David is out perhaps Babel on the right, Benny off Torres.

With Kuyt you just cant count on him creating or scoring any type of chance at the moment.

If we are going on form there is no way Babel should be anywhere near the first team either.

Honestly, I'd have Kuyt in my team over Babel any day of the week.

Babel's got to be one of the worst players we've had in the last 5 years.

100% right on Babel , but our worst player in the last 5 years award goes to...Voronin, hands down.

hard to know what the team will be Wendesday as we have sick players as well as injured, would have been nice to have Aquillani Available for this one.

Reina

Johnson (hopefully)
Carragher
Agger (hopefully)
Insua

Kuyt
Mascherano
Lucas
Benyoun

Ngog
Torres

... we need to go 442 for the win, our options are limited formation wise due to the injures, two quick pacy strikers will throw lyon as they will expect Torres on his own up front. On papaer this team should do it, fingers crossed then.

I feel the same, but we may aswell try and utilise him somehow.
We would be lucky to get £5 million for now, and only then that would probably be one of the Dutch clubs or perhaps a middle of the table team in Spain, that would be entirely pointless thou, unless of course we do have £10-12 million for the winter transfer window and could be added to that.

I'd flog Babel and Dossena and hope for £8m between them. That could get us a half decent squaddie somewhere.
